John, 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale (1645-1713) supported the revolution of 1688 and was chosen as Privy Councillor in 1689, a post he also held under Queen Anne.
For a time, Tweeddale seems to have been undecided whether or not to support the Union. He headed the 'squadrone volante', a group of influential men who took a middle course in the question of union with England. In the end, they came down in favour of the Union and became some of the Union's strongest supporters.
