The painting was given as a christening present by Millais to his godson Lindsay Millais Jopling, who was the son of the sitter.

Given by the artist to Lindsay Millais Jopling; sold by his descendants, Sotheby's 1988; bought by Mr R W Rowland; his widow Mrs J Rowland.
