Madame Villain was Sickert's landlady-housekeeper in Dieppe from August 1899.
The portrait is believed to be of Maurice Villain, who was Sickert's illegitimate son.
Provenance
Purchased by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell in the 1920s; brought to Charleston in 1939; Angelica Garnett; Henrietta Garnett; on loan to Charleston since 1998.
