A hall chair from a set of four designed by Pugin for his own use.

They follow the tradition of hall chairs in having the coat of arms painted on the back, in this case the backs are emblazoned with a martlet, the footless bird incorporated into Pugin's coat of arms. This is one of a pair, the other chair is with the National Museums and Galleries of Wales, Cardiff.

Provenance

A W N Pugin, perhaps first at St. Marie's Grange, Alderbury, then at the Grange, Ramsgate; descent in Pugin's family.
