This work shows the artist wrestling to define the poses of both the male and female figures in his gouache 'Contribution' of 1885, now in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin.

This is a sensitive and intricate work and the study of the woman in particular reveals a delicacy and refinement far beyond the usual preparatory study.
