Reverse: A lion representing Africa depicted crouching in a token of submission in front of a Protea bush, above the words 'SOUTH AFRICA', below a Zulu shield and four crossed assegais. Orange yellow ribbon with two wide and two narrow dark blue stripes. Often referred to as the Zulu War Medal it was awarded for operations against various tribes between September 1877 and December 1879. Purchased by the Art Fund with the assistance of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
