The work depicts a soldier in a greatcoat on a railway bench with his girlfriend asleep on his shoulder.

They wait in the dark for the milk train that will take him away. It is almost certainly auto-biographical as Scott was separated from his wife Mary in 1942 after he joined the Royal Engineers. Scott's wartime paintings were either a visualisation of his own inner feelings or his experiences as a soldier.
