This George III longcase clock has an inlaid pagoda top and an extremely rare 'Beware of the Hawk' automaton with a fine-quality eight day movement.

The maker, John Fernly, moved to Trowbridge in 1773 and made a successful living in the town until 1777. In the 18th century Trowbridge was home to many wealthy clothiers and it likely that the clock was commissioned by one of them. The opulent contents of their homes are recorded in sale advertisements of the time.

Provenance

Collection of Trevor Waddington, OBE (purchased at auction, Frome, 2000).
