What can place-names tell us about the language, history, and landscape of the wetlands of the Isle of Axholme? This talk will show how place-names can illuminate the story of Axholme’s changing landscape, share evidence collected so far, and demonstrate the relevance of place-name study, including how possible changes in the future may connect Axholme with its more watery past.
Kathryn Bullen is a third year PhD researcher at the University of Nottingham. Currently part of the exhibition team at the museum, Kathryn is showcasing her place-name research alongside a celebration of the work of the Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Landscape Partnership, which aims to reconnect the local community with their unique landscape and heritage.
The talk will be complemented by a short presentation by Stewart Wall, Royal Photographic Society, who is leading a group of RPS photographers on a place-name finding tour to Axholme. They will be creating a photobook of their discoveries, which will be shared on the North Lincolnshire Museum website.
