City Art Centre capture the essence of being an islander in the first major exhibition of Donald John Smith's paintings.

Born on the Scottish island of Lewis in 1926, Smith kept a studio on the west side of the island from 1974 until his death in 2014. His work was often inspired by the American and European art movements of the era, yet his work always stayed true to the local subject matter.

The exhibition explores Smith's intense, lyrical depictions of the fishermen and women who call the island home.

This landmark display has been created in partnership with An Lanntair, Stornoway and is part of Edinburgh Art Festival 2021.
