Explore five decades of the contemporary Coventry photographer Masterji.
Maganbhai Patel (1924-2018), better known as Masterji, was a contemporary photographer based in Coventry who came to national attention in 2016 at the age of 94. For decades prior to this Masterji was a leading photographer in Coventry and the first Indian photographer in the city.
Originally doing photography on the side while working for the General Electric Company after arriving in the city in 1951, Masterji spent decades photographing weddings, social gatherings and the lived experiences of people of Coventry. His photos particularly present a unique window into the lives of people who migrated to the Midlands from overseas.
See portraits taken across his long career together with oral history interviews from Coventry’s South Asian communities, exploring the wider context of migration.
