Discover the 150-year history of plastic in an exhibition that maps the shifting fortunes of the material.
Three major institutions have come together to co-produce Plastic: Remaking Our World: the V&A Dundee, Germany’s Vitra Design Museum and MAAT, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon. Together, they’ve contributed product design, graphics, architectural examples and fashion items to tell the story of plastic, once hailed as a miracle material, now understood to be the source of one of the world’s most invasive forms of pollution.
The exhibition takes the long view, representing the achievements behind the invention of plastic, it’s transformative power and subsequent ascendancy around the world. In doing so, audiences are invited to consider the development from ingenuity to terrible consequence.
They will also encounter the new technologies, prototypes and cutting-edge materials that have arisen from attempts by scientists and designers to tackle the flaws of a substance that, in so many different ways, has remade our world.
