Mining, family history, domestic life and maritime history are all represented in the collection.
The museum also houses important paintings by two local 19th-century artists – a fine self-portrait by John Opie (1761-1807), the village's most famous son, and a handsome portrait by his great-nephew Edward Opie, bought with Art Fund help in 2006.
