This talk looks at recent trends for identifying people in the past as Queer, a category that has meaning and inclusivity only in the contemporary world.
What do historians mean by 'Queer' and how far - if at all - is it justifiable to apply the label to those long dead?
Such practices are full of issues over imposing our interpretations onto individuals with no right of reply, but at the same time raise wider ethical questions about how we best serve the memories of such people and what historians can and can't do.
