Walk through a timeline of abandonment to discover the personal stories of those who came before.
The Scottish landscape has for centuries been a subject for artists to paint yet the history of the land has seldom been visually explored.
For centuries families lived and farmed along our straths and glens before being forcibly removed to make way for commercial sheep farming in the 19th Century, leaving the landscape barren and empty of people. Jane Cooper explores the stories of the dispossessed who were removed to coastal strips, or who saught a better furture in neighbouring counties, the industrial south, or far shores. Abandoned homes remain a reminder of their presence.
This exhibition explores each phase of abandonment, allowing the viewer to walk through the timeline of events. Jane skillfully employs maps, archival images, and QR codes as a visual aid to help us explore this lost world, directing us on journeys of discovery of the impact of dispossetion on a lost world.
