Taking John Constable’s painting The Hay Wain as a starting point, this exhibition surveys how Constable’s contemporaries created rural scenes to explore the artistic context of the English landscape.
Taking John Constable’s painting The Hay Wain as a starting point, this exhibition surveys how Constable’s contemporaries created rural scenes to explore the artistic context of the English landscape.
To many 19th-century people who saw Constable’s painting, his vision of the Suffolk landscape was quite radical. Yet today, over 200 years later, the painting is considered a traditional image of the English countryside. This status has led artists and activists to reinterpret, edit, and react to the painting, particularly in light of our changing climate.
