Meet a literary icon and Colchester local who pioneered science fiction.
Explore the life and legacy of Margaret Cavendish, a prolific author, playwright and poet. And did you know? She penned some of the ever first pieces of science fiction writing in her own name, which was rare for a woman writer in the 17th century.
Born and raised in Colchester during the tumultuous years of the Civil War, Cavendish made her way to London where she captivated crowds with her abrasive take-downs of academia and feminism.
