Arbroath
Free to all

Explore Arbroath's maritime history and Bell Rock Lighthouse at the Signal Tower Museum located near the town's picturesque harbour.

Discover the fascinating story of the Bell Rock Lighthouse, the oldest sea-washed lighthouse in the world. The Signal Tower Museum also deep dives into the history of Arbroath, a small fishing port on the north eastern Scottish coast, with multi-media displays and historic objects.

Experience the lighthouse

Built in 1813, Bell Rock Signal Tower was created to communicate with Bell Rock Lighthouse using flags and balls. Find out how numerous shipwrecks at Bell Rock led to the construction of the tower, designed by the famous engineer, Robert Stevenson, and what life was like for the light keepers. You can even take a look at the damage made to the light's lense by a fighter pilot during WW2.

Climb the tower

A dramatic spiral staircase and leads to the tower room where you can discover how the Signal Tower communicated with the Bell Rock Lighthouse, which was 11 miles out to sea, long before radio comms were invented. Tower Tours are on Sundays only and need to be booked in advance.

Local history

Exhibitions in the Lighthouse Keeper's Cottages, including photographs taken by the late Jonathan Ogilvie in the 1980s, give a fascinating insight into Arbroath’s Fishing and Maritime Heritage, incorporating audio-visual elements including quizzes and games for children.

Arbroath Signal Tower Museum is a highlight for anyone interested in maritime history.
