Brading Roman Villa
With a National Art Pass you get
Situated on the Isle of Wight, Brading Roman Villa boasts an extensive collection of Roman archaeology and beautifully preserved mosaic floors.
Overlooking Sandown Bay, the Visitor Centre and Museum at Brading Roman Villa offer a unique insight into Roman life in Britain. After flooding in the 1990s, a new structure was erected to cover and preserve the remains of the West Range of the villa, which was built around AD300, so it can now be enjoyed whatever the weather.
Journey back in time
Exhibitions of artefacts and archaeological reports, from numerous excavations of the area, help to tell the story of the impressive structure. There is even a virtual reconstruction of what the villa may have looked like in its heyday.
Mosaics
Discovered in the 1880s by Captain Thorpe and Farmer Munns, a series of floor mosaics portraying Roman myths and legends make up one of the most well preserved collections in the UK. Made from local materials, mosaics depicting recognisable gods and goddesses such as Orpheus and Medusa sit alongside an intriguing, lesser-known, cockerel headed man.
Cafe
With panoramic views of the grounds and Sandown Bay, the Forum Coffee Shop is the ideal place to pick up a snack, relax and digest what you've discovered in the museum.
