Brodsworth Hall is a Victorian mansion in Doncaster, set in 15 acres of restored gardens, offering a glimpse into 19th century life.

Built in the 1860s for the Thellusson family, the house remains virtually unchanged, showcasing a time capsule of Victorian interiors. From grand reception rooms adorned with opulent furnishings to the more modest servants’ quarters, Brodsworth Hall tells the story of the family and their staff.

Restoring the historic house

English Heritage acquired the run down property in 1990 and embarked on a meticulous conservation project. The interiors were gently preserved, restoring the Italianate style decor of the 1860s. Many items on display were original furnishings and include Dutch old masters, a grand piano and Italian marble sculpture collection. A rich archive of photographs and oral history interviews add personal details and insights to the Brodsworth story.

Victorian gardens

Step outside Brodsworth Hall and you'll be greeted by 15 acres of award-winning Victorian pleasure gardens restored to their former glory. Explore the floral delights of the fern dell grotto, Italian garden and rose garden, or take the statue walk adorned with classical sculptures. Don't miss the archery green and Target House, once used to store bows and arrows, but today houses an exhibition about the gardens.

A family day out

Brodsworth Hall and Gardens is a perfect destination for a family picnic, and even offers a children's play area, providing a dedicated space for little ones to burn off energy. Look out for family activities during the school holidays, live brass bands on summer Sundays and a year-round programme of events.
