A meticulously restored 17th-century house in Whitby, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum celebrates where the famous mariner was apprenticed.

Located in Walker’s House, the residence of Cook’s former employer, Captain John Walker, the museum breathes life into the Naval master’s story in the very building where he lodged as a young apprentice. A must-see for anyone interested in maritime history or the Age of Exploration, with its engaging exhibits, historic setting, and beautiful harbour views, the museum provides a captivating exploration of Cook’s life and legacy.

What to see

Collections on Cook and those who sailed with him include original paintings and drawings by artists such as Thomas Gainsborough, William Hodges (the official artist on Cook's second voyage) and John Webber (the official artist on Cook's third and final voyage). Other displays include documents, furniture, antiquarian books, ship models and ethnographic artefacts.

Reconstructed rooms

The two ground-floor rooms are furnished according to a 1754 inventory of Walker’s house evoking the atmosphere of Quaker simplicity and hard-earned comfort. These rooms offer a fascinating glimpse into the everyday life of Whitby in the 18th century.

Handwritten letters

The museum houses original letters penned by Cook himself, and others, offering a glimpse into his thoughts and experiences. These include a note written by King George III expressing his regret at the news of Cook's death in 1779 at the age of 50.
