Cotehele
With a National Art Pass you get
In the woods above the River Tamar nestles Cotehele, a Tudor house adorned with tapestries and armour, overlooking a beautiful estate with valley views.
Owned by the National Trust, Cotehele in Cornwall boasts a unique blend of medieval and Tudor architecture. Sir Richard Edgcumbe, who fought for Henry Tudor at Bosworth Field, used the spoils of war to construct the current structure in the 15th century. Remarkably it has remained relatively unchanged for over five centuries.
Grand interiors
Explore well preserved rooms showcasing various architectural styles, and adorned with tapestries, furniture and portraits that span generations. Look out for some interesting items such as a whale’s jawbone flanking the doorway in the Great Hall, and the 500 year old turret clock, that still works to this day.
Prosthetic arm
Among the stranger objects inside Cotehele’s house is a mechanical arm from the late 16th or early 17th centuries. Terrible injuries on bloody battlefields during the Tudor and Stuart eras led surgeons of the day to design prostheses for lost limbs.
Cotehele Mill
Cotehele offers a glimpse into rural life over the centuries. The estate includes kitchen gardens and orchards, plus working mill buildings, where you can learn about grinding corn and pressing cider.
Cream tea?
If you are in need of a rest, refreshments are served at both The Edgcumbe at Cotehele Quay and the Barn Restaurant, the latter serving Cornish cream teas. Alternatively you can enjoy a picnic on the quay or in the picnic area by the Cherry Orchard.
If you struggle to walk, but want to explore the grounds, an all-terrain Tramper is available to hire. Advance booking is essential.
