Fairfax House
With a National Art Pass you get
Step back to 18th century York at Fairfax House, a grand townhouse with opulent rococo interiors and stuccowork.
In the 20th century the house was re-purposed as a cinema and dance hall, until York Civic Trust took ownership in the 1980s and restored to its former glory. Today visitors are transported back to the Georgian era, the house reflecting the tastes and fashions of the day.
Ornate interiors
Fairfax House is a portal to 18th-century York, offering a glimpse into the life of high society. Originally built for a merchant, the house found its true purpose as the winter residence of Viscount Fairfax and his daughter. Architect John Carr, the city’s most celebrated architect of the era, meticulously designed the interior, with intricate details and lavish ornamentation. Elaborate stuccowork, believed to be designed by Giuseppe Cortese, decorates the ceilings of the Library, Dining Room, Drawing Room, Saloon and Great Staircase, believed to be designed by Giuseppe Cortese.
Noel Terry Collection
Walk through Fairfax House and marvel at the exquisite Noel Terry Collection, described by Christie’s as one of the finest of the 20th century, and bequeathed to the city after Terry’s death in 1979. Discover the craftsmanship of Georgian furniture, delicate clocks and barometers, silverware and paintings that adorn the walls.
Events and exhibitions
The house offers a program of special events and changing exhibitions. Immerse yourself in a bygone era with themed events, or delve deeper into a particular aspect of Georgian history through a temporary exhibition.
