God’s House Tower
With a National Art Pass you get
God's House Tower is a 13th century gatehouse, its history brought to life with immersive installations and displays, plus views across Southampton Water.
After a four-year restoration project God’s House Tower, or GHT, re-opened as Southampton’s new arts and heritage venue in 2019. The oldest part of the building, originally known as God’s House Gate, was built in 1189 and named due to its proximity to God’s House Hospital. Since then, the unique, historical structure has been used to guard the town from attack by sea, as a gaol and even a mortuary. If walls could talk!
Stories Behind the Stones
Discover centuries of local history retold with immersive installations and fascinating displays in the GHT’s permanent exhibit, where each floor takes you through a different aspect of the tower’s past. Stories Behind the Stones features the work of Southampton artists who have interpreted GHT’s hidden and dark histories, bringing them to life with beautiful and sometimes unsettling installations.
After hours
Look out for GHT Lates at God’s House Tower for an evening of local talent, music, art, heritage and street food, plus exclusive access to the tower and the roof after normal opening hours, as well as a chance to hang out in the cafe and courtyard.
