The award-winning Haslemere Educational Museum offers remarkable collections of natural history, human history and geology.
Founded in 1888 by Sir Jonathan Hutchinson, F.R.S, a surgeon with a passion for natural history, the Haslemere Educational Museum is a hidden gem in Surrey. The collections cover natural history, geology and human history amongst other things and the museum is a hub for learning and community.
Diverse collection
The collection encompasses a wide range of different types of objects from archaeology to fine arts and textiles to European arts and crafts artefacts. From Mesolithic/Neolithic flints from the nearby hill of Black Down in West Sussex and early Romano-British/Late Celtic cremation urns from the Haslemere grave site, to watercolours, oils, prints and drawings, many by local artists. It also includes a photographic media collection of Haslemere buildings, events and people.
Education at its heart
The museum is dedicated to fostering a love of learning for all ages and abilities. A dedicated education room offers a space for workshops, courses, and lectures for curious minds of all ages. Outreach programs bring the museum experience to schools and community groups, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to explore the wonders of the collections. The museum also maintains a close relationship with the Haslemere Natural History Society, offering joint events and talks.
