Ickworth
With a National Art Pass you get
Ickworth House's striking Neoclassical facade dominates the Suffolk countryside outside Bury St Edmunds.
The house itself is a unique sight, resembling a giant rotunda surrounded by wings, it is often admired for its architectural significance. Owned by the National Trust since 1956, the estate offers a wealth of history, art, and outdoor activities.
House origins
Frederick Augustus Hervey, the 4th Earl of Bristol spent his life travelling the continent, gathering together a vast collection of paintings, sculpture and artefacts. Already in possession of several houses, he conceived Ickworth primarily as a museum for his treasures. Hervey commissioned The Fury of Athamas from John Flaxman, a promising young sculptor, for his envisioned sculpture gallery. Today the statue is the focal point of the main hall.
Silver and paintings
Ickworth is home to almost a thousand pieces of silver and one of the most important collections of 18th-century silver in Europe. Discover these pieces alongside Regency furniture, and paintings by famous artists like Gainsborough and Hogarth.
Gardens and parkland
The Italianate Gardens, among the earliest in the UK, provide a delightful escape. Explore the Mediterranean Temple Garden, a magical Victorian Stumpery, or simply wander the grounds. Ickworth also boasts over 1800 acres of parkland, offering opportunities for exploration. Hike or cycle along the scenic trails, uncovering ancient woodlands, rolling hills, and even working farmland, watch out for the sheep!
