Mercer Art Gallery
Explore Victorian paintings, contemporary art, and special exhibitions at Mercer Art Gallery, housed in Harrogate's elegant former Promenade Rooms.
The Mercer Art Gallery is a vibrant cultural hub located in the heart of Harrogate. Housed within the grand, classical building of the Promenade Rooms, the gallery was originally built in 1806 as a social space for spa visitors. The venue has transformed over the years, serving as a reading room, theatre, and even a town hall before finding its final incarnation as an art gallery in 1991.
Permanent collection
Harrogate’s Fine Art Collection, exceeding 2,000 pieces, focuses primarily on Victorian and 20th-century artists. Works by British masters like William Powell Frith and Atkinson Grimshaw, sit alongside captivating pieces by Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Edward Burne-Jones. The Mercer also houses 20th century works by Dame Laura Knight, Alan Davie and many more.
Temporary exhibitions
The permanent collections is not always on display, and there is a changing exhibition programme in each of the two gallery spaces. These range from national touring exhibitions of painting, photography, sculpture and crafts, to exhibitions from the permanent collections, to displays by local artists.
With its diverse collection, engaging exhibitions, and innovative programs, Mercer Art Gallery serves as a cornerstone for artistic discovery in the heart of Harrogate.
