Nantgarw Chinaworks Museum
With a National Art Pass you get
The only surviving early 19th-century porcelain works in the UK, Nantgarw Chinaworks Museum still supports artists working with ceramics today.
Nestled within the picturesque Welsh countryside, this museum offers a unique glimpse into the world of fine porcelain production, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship of the past, while celebrating contemporary ceramic artistry.
What to see
Explore the factory's original kilns, workshops, and showrooms, which have been carefully preserved and restored. The museum also houses a collection of exquisite porcelain pieces, including some of the finest examples of Nantgarw porcelain ever produced.
Billingsley porcelain
Learn about the work of William Billingsley, whose extremely fine porcelain made to his own recipe is widely considered among the world’s best. Produced between 1813 and 1820, very little of it remains today due to its fragility, and individual pieces are now highly desirable. Nantgarw embarked on a successful Art Happens project to recreate this porcelain.
Contemporary ceramics
Nantgarw is still active in encouraging and promoting the work of contemporary ceramicists. Three resident artists create, fire and exhibit new work on site, and host regular workshops in order to share knowledge and skills.
Get creative
For those seeking a more hands-on experience, the museum offers a variety of workshops and classes suitable for all ages. Families can enjoy pottery painting sessions, while adults can learn advanced techniques like throwing or wheel throwing. The museum also hosts special events and exhibitions throughout the year.
