Newport Roman Villa
With a National Art Pass you get
Newport Roman Villa, built around 270 AD, reveals some fascinating details about the Roman way of life on the Isle of Wight.
Discovered accidentally in 1926 by workmen digging foundations, the remarkably well-preserved farmhouse dates back to the third century. The extensive remains give visitors an opportunity to step back in time and explore how a wealthy Romano-British family lived nearly 2,000 years ago.
Immerse yourself in Roman living
The site incorporates recreated scenes within the villa, allowing visitors to imagine themselves transported back in time. These include a Roman kitchen, where you can imagine the preparation of meals, and a recreated Roman garden, bursting with plants typical of the era.
A luxurious farmhouse
Evidence suggests the site functioned as a working farm, but also reveals the comfortable lifestyle of its occupants. The centrepiece is a well-preserved bath suite, complete with underfloor heating (hypocaust), a hallmark of Roman engineering. Mosaic floors and remnants of other decorative features hint at the aesthetic choices of the residents.
Little Romans activities
Children can participate in activities in the education room, where they can get hands-on with history. Learn about what the Romans wore, and dress up in some clothes from the era, or maybe have a go at Mosaic making or reconstructing a replica Roman pot.
Did you know?
Newport Roman Villa is that it was almost reburied after excavation. Thankfully, the public's interest and the generosity of a local resident ensured its preservation and transformation into the valuable historical resource it is today.
