Old Gala House showcases a programme of contemporary arts and crafts, combining touring exhibitions with works by artists living in the Scottish Borders.

Old Gala House Museum & Gallery is a striking building in the heart of Galashiels, Scotland. It tells the story of the town and its people along with hosting a vibrant programme of exhibitions and events.

The Lairds residence

Originally constructed in 1583, it served as the residence of the Lairds of Galashiels for centuries. With over 400 years of history, the house has undergone extensions and renovations, reflecting changing architectural styles.

Explore the grand rooms

Each room within Old Gala House tells its own story, from the painted, wooden-panelled ceiling dating back to 1635, to the ornate eighteenth-century plaster ceiling in the Christopher Boyd Galley.

Art, craft and sculpture

The Old Gala House features several exhibition spaces which showcase a dynamic program of contemporary art and craft exhibitions. The Clapperton Room also hosts a permanent exhibition dedicated to the locally born sculptor, Thomas Clapperton (1879-1962).

Did you know?

The famous Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott was a frequent visitor to the house during his lifetime.

Old Gala House Museum & Gallery tells the story of the town and its people along with hosting a vibrant programme of exhibitions and events.

New for 2024 is the Old Gala House Pringle Room Artisan gift shop, which sees an exciting selection of arts and crafts from a mix of artists and makers on show and for sale for that special unusual gift. The much anticipated annual exhibitions from local groups; Old Gala Club, this year is looking at the town’s popular 'Bailie' from the 1900s George Hope Tait an influential man and amateur painter; Also Galashiels Studio Club are sure to delight us again with their Annual Art exhibition in the main Gallery followed by another exhibition later in July called 'Threads' from various members of the S.S.A. We also have a new works exhibition by local artist Ann Louise Kieran in The Laird’s Room, else where somewhere else, consisting of drawings, paintings and collage using ink.

The permanent displays include some iconic furniture by the late Tim Stead- along with the gift shop and art exhibitions. Our volunteer gardeners have been working hard throughout the year and you can be sure of seeing a riot of colour whenever you visit. Free wifi is available.
