The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, set in a striking cliff-top Grade II Listed Victorian house, showcases an internationally renowned art collection.
The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum in Bournemouth was once the luxurious home of Sir Merton and Lady Annie Russell-Cotes. Today it stands as a captivating venue housing their extensive collection of art and artefacts.
Admire art from around the world
Spread over the house and four dedicated galleries, the permanent collection features an eclectic mix of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and decorative arts, reflecting the diverse interests and extensive travels of the Russell-Cotes couple. Highlights include works by renowned Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and European and Japanese arts.
Explore the house
While the museum boasts an impressive collection of artworks, it's the building itself that truly steals the show. The opulent interiors are adorned with intricate plasterwork, stained glass windows, and lavish furnishings. Wander through the grand reception rooms, admire the stunning Oriental-inspired décor, and even step into the private quarters of the Russell-Cotes family.
Things to do
The museum displays a variety of temporary exhibitions throughout the year as well as organising talks, tours, workshops and musical performances in the house. For families, children can learn about different art techniques, explore the museum's collections, and even dress up in Victorian costumes. The museum's Café offers light refreshments if you need a break, alternatively you could book Afternoon Tea.
