Internationally recognised, the South London Gallery comprises a series of exhibition spaces, a bookshop, cafe, artists’ flat and garden designed by Gabriel Orozco.
The gallery's collection began with its founding in 1891 and includes works by modern British artists, more than 500 20th-century prints, and contemporary works relating to South London.
Through a range of exhibitions and events, the gallery has featured established figures such as conceptual sculptor Tom Friedman, sculptor Eva Rothschild, performance and conceptual artist Danh Vo as well as other celebrated artists such as Haegue Yang, Laurie Robins and Rory Pilgrim. Many exhibitions at South London Gallery form part of larger community projects, such as Keg de Souza’s five-week residency consisting of 11 mapping and making workshops with local families exploring life on the neighbouring Pelican Estate.
Located between Peckham and Camberwell, South London Gallery has become widely regarded as one of the most important art institutions in South London. The gallery's projects and programmes are designed to bring art and experiences to the local community and include a free education programme with a peer-led young people’s forum, family workshops and artist-led projects.
In late 2016, work was finished on a specially designed garden by artist Gabriel Orozco, created in collaboration with horticulturists from the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and 6a Architects. Supported by donors including Art Fund, this permanent sculptural garden uses Orozco's familiar circle patterns and offers a place to think, play, explore and display work by other artists.
And, in July 2018, the gallery successfully raised £25,000 through our crowdfunding platform, Art Happens, to kit out the newly restored Fire Station opposite the main building, bringing it back to life as an inspiring new community art space and nearly doubling the size of the gallery as a whole.
