Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery
The Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery commemorates local people who died in World War I, alongside vibrant contemporary art spaces.
Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery was built in Greco-Roman style, with an impressive front portico supported by towering columns. Opened on 15 October 1925 by HRH Prince Henry, the building comprises two art gallery spaces and a memorial hall on the ground floor, with a further gallery space upstairs.
Memorial
Marble tablets in the memorial hall commemorate the people of Stockport who died in World War I, with a large sculpture of Britannia and a man kneeling before her also occupying the apse.
Galleries
The building's gallery spaces are home to year-round exhibitions from national and international artists, and have exhibited some of the artworld's finest. Today the gallery boasts an extensive program, which now gives emerging artists a chance to showcase their work, with events and workshops also hosted here.
The 100th Stockport Art Guild Annual Exhibition was held in 2021, an annual showcase of works by members of the guild that includes the opportunity for the public to buy original artworks.
