The Cooper Gallery
The Cooper Gallery in Barnsley houses British and European art from the 17th to 21st centuries, including works by Turner.
This charming art gallery in South Yorkshire is a a great place to explore and appreciate art in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Established in the 1910s by art collector Samuel Joshua Cooper, the gallery focuses mainly on the traditional, however it does also incorporate exciting temporary exhibitions featuring contemporary art, photography, and more.
Diverse collection
The permanent art collection contains over 400 works spanning four centuries. Expect to see paintings by JMW Turner, Vanessa Bell and Prunella Clough, and drawings and sketches by Roger Fry, Jean Francois Millet and John Ruskin.
Local artists
Barnsley artists also feature in the collection, from Victorians Abel Hold and Madeline Moore to more recent works by Malcolm Whittaker and John Kenneth Long. As well as the permanent collection, The Cooper Gallery also hosts temporary exhibitions featuring local artists and themes.
Workshops and events
The gallery organises creative workshops and special events for both children and adults. Grown-ups can learn to draw or drop in to a community session, whilst kids can get hands-on and express their inner Picasso!
