Dora Carrington moved to Bedford when she was 10 and her talent for art was spotted at Bedford Girl's Grammar School.

This work was probably painted or at least sketched at Gerald Brenan's house at Yegen in Spain, where Carrington was staying in 1924. Brenan, a lover of Carrington's, often had evening musical gatherings at his home, inviting local musicians to play and sing. This work relates well to Mrs Box by the same artist acquired in 2005 with Art Fund help.
