Zodiac tiles

William Burges, c. 1880

The Cecil Higgins Art Gallery houses one of the best collections of works by and relating to Burges, outside London and Cardiff including Burges' own bed, dressing table and a zodiac themed bookcase. Burges designed these Zodiac tiles for Castell Coch, one of the residences of the 3rd Marquess of Bute, where they were installed in the drawing room fireplace. This panel consists of thirty tiles, twelve signs of the Zodiac with eighteen border tiles of other designs.
