Exploring lived experiences of motherhood through over one hundred diverse artworks
Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood, a major exhibition by Hayward Gallery Touring, brings together over 100 artworks capturing the joys and challenges of motherhood from the feminist avant-garde to the present day. It aims to fill the gap in art history by portraying motherhood as a lived experience, asserting the artist mother as a culturally significant figure.
Featuring over sixty artists, the exhibition delves into the creative aspects of motherhood, addressing ambivalence, exhaustion, and grief. Organised around three themes – Creation, Maintenance, and Loss – the exhibition offers a nuanced exploration of contemporary concerns related to gender, caregiving, and reproductive rights.
