Revealing how Welsh mines protected paintings during the Second World War
For the Welsh leg of the National Gallery’s UK-wide 200th anniversary programme, The National Library of Wales will host Canaletto's The Stonemason's Yard for their exhibition exploring Welsh history and landscape through painting.
The Stonemason’s Yard by Canaletto is a carefully crafted and atmospheric depiction of a Venetian shipyard. Like many other works in the National Gallery’s collection, it was housed in the slate mines of Manod during the Second World War. The display will highlight this remarkable history by showcasing archive footage alongside the painting.
