Turner Prize-shortlisted artist Nathan Coley will unveil a major illuminated text sculpture in the grounds of Charleston in April 2022.
This newly commissioned work is part of ‘Tentative Words Change Everything’, an exhibition which brings together six of the artist’s sculptures across locations in and around the Lewes district.
Evoking a sense of fairground and theatreland with the use of scaffolding and illuminated lightbulbs, Coley creates his monumental sculptures using existing phrases. In the past these public proclamations have come from George Bernard Shaw, a sign found in rural Denmark and a radio interview with a woman reflecting on 10 years after 9/11.
The sculpture will encourage audiences to reflect on the meaning of Charleston as a modernist home, and the conversations which happened within it a century ago.
