Historic and contemporary works are brought together to tell stories about colonialism, exploitation and resistance.
Spanning 250 years, Entangled Pasts, 1768–now: Art, Colonialism and Change brings together over 100 major contemporary and historic works of art to explore the role art played in shaping narratives around empire, enslavement and abolition.
Moving from 1768 to the present, the exhibition showcases over 50 artists connected to the Royal Academy to trace connections across time and place to reveal the colonial underpinnings of ‘British’ art. It will feature important works from the collection and archive, ranging from large-scale painting, sculpture, immersive installation and film to intimate works on paper and poetry.
