Rheim Alkadhi explores war and the repercussions of colonialism in Iraq through symbolic sculpture.
Templates for Liberation, Rheim Alkadhi's UK's debut, confronts the enduring aftermath of war and colonialism in present-day Iraq. The showcase features sculptures crafted from heavy-duty tarpaulins of cross-border vehicles, embodying transnational struggles. The adjacent reading room delves into Iraq's colonial past, resource exploitation, and biometric profiling.
Alkadhi envisions the exhibition as a catalyst for liberatory dialogues, urging a reimagining of global spaces and a rejection of prevailing injustices. The tarpaulin sculptures, symbolic of global trade and environmental impact, bear witness to the artist-material dialogue. The reading room exposes colonial legacies while presenting a speculative narrative of rebellious voices reclaiming representation beyond categorisation.
