Discover the sacred and cultural roles of psychoactive plants in art
An exploration into the sacred and social roles that psychoactive plants have played throughout history, by way of objects, sculpture, paintings and textiles. This exhibition examines how products such as palm wine, peyote, tobacco, betel nut, and kava are integral to various cultures for their spiritual, economic, and healing properties.
Discover global artefacts linked to traditional plant use, and contemporary artists including Sethembile Msezane (South Africa) and Guadalupe Muñoz (Mexico), and newly-commissioned work from Togolese-British artist Divine Southgate-Smith. A special green tea section, curated as a tearoom by Urasenke School's Mr Yasuhiro Yamaguchi, highlights the cultural significance of tea as a ceremonial practice.
This exhibition forms part of Sainsbury Centre's six month exhibition programme exploring the highs and lows of taking drugs.
