Barbara Walker: Being Here

4 October 2024 - 26 January 2025
Tuesday-Sunday 10am to 5pm - and until 9pm on Thursdays
Free to all

The first survey exhibition and new commission by 2023 Turner Prize nominee Barbara Walker.

Barbara Walker's practice is shaped by her lived experience of growing up in Birmingham, which deals with issues of class, race, power and belonging. Her figurative drawings range from small works on paper to large-scale wall drawings, telling stories about Black communities and culture with empathy and intense observation.

The exhibition is centred on concepts of visibility and erasure, and will display works from her career, including her Turner Prize nominated series Burden of Proof (2022-23). It will also include a new commission about the Windrush generation, responding to the Whitworth's collections of historic drawings and wallpaper.
