Explore local history items, plus the nationally significant Olive Matthews Collection of Dress and Textiles at Chertsey Museum in Surrey.
Discover the rich history and culture of the borough of Runnymede. Whether you're interested in archaeology, social history, or textiles, Chertsey Museum has something for everyone.
Diverse collection
The Runnymede Room is a great place to begin. Explore the history of Chertsey Abbey, a significant medieval monastery. A famous Viking sword is one of the highlights, alongside informative displays that delve into the history of Runnymede, known for being the location of the signing of the Magna Carta. The museum also houses social history items, including documents and photographs.
Costumes
One of the highlights of the museum is the significant collection of costumes and accessories amassed by Olive Matthews. Mainly spanning the 18th-20th centuries, but with some items as old as 400 years, the collection was a key element to the creation of the museum as it is today.
Clocks and watches
From grandfather clocks to gentleman's pocket watches, an array of British and Continental timepieces can be found at Chertsey Museum. The area had a strong tradition of clockmakers in the 18th, 19th and even 20th centuries, including makers such as John James, Cartwright and James Douglass.
The museum runs a programme of free family craft activities as well as the Young Archaeologists' Club.
