Chiddingstone Castle
With a National Art Pass you get
Chiddingstone Castle is a country house with Tudor origins, redesigned in the 19th century to resemble a medieval castle.
Explore the unique blend of architectural styles, delve into the world of Denys Eyre Bower's collection, and soak in the beauty of the Kent countryside at Chiddingstone Castle.
One man’s collection
The house is filled with extraordinary artefacts which were amassed by renowned art dealer and avid collector, Denys Eyre Bower, who lived at the Castle from 1955 to 1977. The collections include Japanese lacquerware and Samurai armour, Ancient Egyptian artefacts, Buddhist objects, Stuart paintings and Jacobite manuscripts.
Woodland walks
The grounds feature views of the North Downs, a Grade II* listed Victorian Orangery, large open lawns, woodland walks and a lake which is naturally stocked and can be fished all year round. From the Castle you can take a five-minute stroll over the bridge into the village of Chiddingstone.
Afternoon tea
Enjoy a light lunch or book an afternoon tea at the castle’s tea room. Alternatively you browse the gift shop in the Well Tower which sells a delightful array of local produce, gifts, antiques and second hand books.
Did you know?
Although Chiddingstone Castle served as the Streatfeild family's seat for centuries, the family didn't reside there after 1900. Before Bower bought the residence in 1957, the castle had played a different role, serving as a temporary home for Canadian troops stationed in England during World War II.
Dogs on leads are welcome in the grounds and courtyard tea room. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the building.
