Corinium Museum
With a National Art Pass you get
The multi-award-winning Corinium Museum is home to a collection of highly significant finds from Britain's second largest Roman town, known today as Cirencester.
If you find yourself in the Cotswolds, a visit to the Corinium Museum is a must. The museum houses over 60,000 objects unearthed from the surrounding area. With its interactive exhibits and engaging events, the museum taps into the rich history of Cirencester, known as Corinium Dobunnorum during Roman rule.
Roman history
The museum’s crown jewels are undoubtedly its extensive Roman collections. Corinium Dobunnorum, the Roman name for Cirencester, was a thriving town, and the museum reflects that legacy. Explore stunning 2nd-4th-century Roman mosaic floors, intricate carvings, and everyday objects used by the Romans such as knives, brooches earrings and a comb.
Prehistoric finds
While Roman finds dominate the collection, the museum delves much further back in time. Neolithic tools and prehistoric pottery provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the earliest inhabitants of the Cotswolds. Keep an eye out for ‘Rusty’ the Iron Age dog skeleton, meticulously reconstructed after excavation in 2008 on the north-eastern edge of Cirencester.
