Dating back to 1880, the Lapworth Museum of Geology is one of the principal geological museums in the UK and has the largest and finest geological collection in the Midlands. Whether you're a geology buff or simply curious about the natural world, this museum is a fascinating place to explore, offering a unique blend of education and entertainment.
Marvel at geological collections
The collections contain over 250,000 specimens covering most aspects of the geological sciences, including palaeontology, mineralogy and petrology. In addition, there are also important collections of scientific instruments, geological models, zoology, archaeology, and one of the most extensive and important geological archives in the UK.
Find a fossil
The museum houses fossils from the Midlands such as the Wenlock Limestone of Dudley, as well as from around the world. See fish collections from Brazil, Italy, Lebanon and USA and crabs, lobsters and pterosaurs from the Solnholfen Limestone in Germany.
Discover geologists
The collections also include significant material from many influential geologists, scientists and collectors of the 19th and early 20th centuries. These include geological pioneer Charles Lapworth, the first Professor of Geology at the university, after whom the museum is named.
Fun for all ages
Children can become budding geologists, exploring touch tables, examining fossils under microscopes, and even participating in fossil-hunting simulations, while educational workshops delve deeper into geological topics. The museum also hosts a range of special events and exhibitions throughout the year, from quiz nights to lectures, museum tours to concerts.
