Housed in an early Victorian building dating back to the1860s, the museum is named after a local clockmaker and former Mayor of Basingstoke, George Willis. Showcasing the area’s rich heritage from the Stone Age to the modern day, it offers a diverse range of exhibits, activities for visitors of all ages, and a surprising link to the author Jane Austen.

See fascinating artefacts from the Stone Age to Saxon periods discovered in the local area. The exhibition includes mammoth tusk found near North Warnborough and items from Calleva Atrebatum, Silchester Roman Town.

The Sainsbury Gallery regularly hosts temporary art exhibitions featuring works by local and national artists. These exhibitions can range from paintings and sculptures to photography and mixed media.
Jane Austen statue
Jane Austen attended social gatherings in Basingstoke and knew the area well. Her statue, designed by Hampshire-based sculptor Adam Roud, was unveiled to commemorate the 200th anniversary of her death.
