Although Glasgow had the best collection of European arms and armour in the country outside the national collections in London, this was the first all-metal pistol by a Glasgow gunsmith to enter the Museum.

Indeed it may well be the only Glasgow-made pistol of its type in existence. Although in good condition, it has minor damages, and was clearly made as a practical weapon which has seen active service.

In this it differs from many of the all metal pistols made at Doune in Perthshire in the 18th century, which are almost to be regarded as costume pieces. The stock is subtly offset at the butt to make accurate aiming easier.
