This photograph was created by Billingham as a result of an invitation to contribute work as a contemporary response to an exhibition at Norwich Castle entitled ‘A Period Eye’ which featured 19th century photographs from the collection at the Norwich City library.

Billingham was inspired by photographs by PH Emerson in the library collection. He has spoken of the project: 'My initial idea was to photograph the big open spaces... a lot of the landscape is so flat and open and I had this idea that the sky and the land or the sea would all melt into one under the changing weather conditions, like a Turner.' This work was acquired with the support of the Art Fund with the assistance of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

Provenance
